Jonathan, 21, was recently named one of the top 50 young talents in European football by UEFA.com. At an international level, Jonathan was named Canada Soccer’s 2019 Player of the Year after winning the Golden Boot at the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup. In total, he has scored 15 goals while providing 8 assists in 16 appearances for Canada. At club level, Jonathan finished fifth in the voting for the Belgian league’s 2019 Golden Shoe award. Since his professional debut in 2018, Jonathan was KAA Gent’s leading scorer with 37 goals and 15 assists across all competitions, including 7 goals and 2 assists in the UEFA Europa League (including qualifying). He finished the 2019-20 season as the Belgian league's top scorer. In August 2020, David earned a move to LOSC Lille in Ligue 1. The transfer fee set a new club-record and was also the highest fee paid for a Canadian and for a player from Belgium’s top flight. Jonathan was also named a finalist for the 2020 Golden Boy Award. In his debut season in France, David and Lille won a historic Ligue 1 championship. Jonathan contributed a major part to Lille's league winning form, scoring 13 goals, including five match-winners.
